The Tomorrow Mentality

I am James and I am an addict. Although I do not go to rehab, I have ways of dealing with my triggers, and one of those things is writing. Starting this blog has been a blessing to me, because it helps to put things down where it is tangible. I feel like maybe, what I am going through, will somehow, help someone else. Lets face it, everyone has addictions, of some sort, whether or not they admit it. Lets get one thing straight though, All addictions are not drugs. There are some that are addicted to overeating, shopping, and even throwing up after they eat. I was addicted to many things, through my whole life, but the one thing I’m prouder of quitting than them all is cigarettes. Once I was able to quit those, everything else was cake, well not cake but it made things easier. If you asked me I would have said I was more addicted to everything else than cigarettes while i was smoking.

I believe that the worst thing, someone can do, is plan on quitting in the future. It does not work there will always be another tomorrow, and if someone really does want to quit, they will throw the thing away and quit now. I know this is harsh, but I wish someone had told me these things, not that I would have listened, because hey, none can convince you to quit except for you. I’ve seen this first hand. In fact, if someone nags someone else to quit it can be a trigger for them to use even more. remember it is called addiction, for a reason. So, why not tomorrow? The first reason is someone can always say tomorrow. The second reason is that no one is promised tomorrow. It is a sign of weakness to procrastinate over and over. I can admit something for myself anyways. When I said tomorrow I may have tricked myself into believing it, but I was never serious enough to quit until i said i’m done.

There are many stresses in life, and I would never recommend quitting something, without offering advice on how to keep at it. As soon as someone tries to quit something is when everything starts happening to make them want to use. My first piece of advice is to replace a bad habit with a good one. The dangers of replacing a bad habit, with another bad one is failure. If someone decides they want to quit smoking, and pick up cookies instead for example. They make it three days, and the car breaks down causing them to miss a very important interview, for the job they really want. This person might decide, its to much and smoke again, only now, they smoked 3 packs of cigarettes and ate three whole bags of cookies too, making them feel even worse about themselves. The bright side of good habits is if they do pick the cigarettes back up at least they made a good habit, which has to make them feel better, which may even catapult them into trying again.

The next idea to help someone quit, is to count what it cost. Don’t just count what it cost a week count it all how many years has this person been spending, how much? If the habit is really bad, they may even have to add the fines or hospital bills. Repairs to the car, or phone. This is when some may get angry enough at them self, to help, them quit. This strategy was one that played a major role in helping me to quit smoking. Id like to hear some feedback from some of you. Have you quit a bad habit, and what strategies did you use? If anyone needs prayer has any stories or just needs someone to listen I am always willing to listen. thank you, and have a great night

My name is James Carter, and you are visiting breaking bad habits. I believe everyone has habits, good and bad. When I was 34 years old, I woke up and looked in the mirror. I was shocked, I had been drinking every night for so long, that I was fat. I weighed 355 pounds, and ran out of breathe and almost passed out to try and tie my shoes. This was the day I started to wake up. I had a long journey ahead of me, but with prayer, meditation, fasting and exercise I was on my way. It’s been 6 years since then I’ve quit most of my bad habits, and I’m down to below 200 pounds. I have to be honest, that day in 2014 I never dreamed I would have gotten this far. If someone like me can quit, so can you.
